Indianapolis (Latitude: 39.79 N, Longitude: 86.15 W), the capital of Indiana and the seat of Marion County, is in the state of Indiana, United States of America. The name Indianapolis is a combination of Indiana and the Greek word “polis” for city. It has level or slightly rolling terrain and it is situated in central Indiana, on the eastern side of the White River. It is elevated at 645 feet to 910 feet above sea level and thus has an even distribution of precipitation throughout the year. The polar air from the north produces low humidity and each winter snowfalls average three inches or more. Summers are warm. The population as on the year 2000 was 1,607,486 comprising of Whites, Black or African American, American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino, and Others. During 1999, the per capita income was $21,640; median household income was $40,051; and total households were 320,518. The number of households with income less than $10,000 was 28,240 and with income of $200,000 or more was 5,519.
Indianapolis hosts major sporting events that lead to enhanced business opportunities and more jobs. The hotel industry and tourism are the major economic factors. It has the largest stockyards east of Chicago, thereby making Indianapolis an important meatpacking center. Indianapolis Private Industry Council Inc., through seven WorkOne centers provides job services. It also assists businesses with hiring and training programs with IMPACT, Indiana’s Welfare-to-Work program. The JobWorks program assists job seekers throughout Northeastern Indiana. Indianapolis hires skilled and semi-skilled workers in construction, mining, manufacturing, trade, transportation, information, financial activities, professional and business services, educational and health services, leisure and hospitality, government, and other services. Today, Indianapolis is in the midst of a multi-cultural and economic resurgence, progressing at a rapid pace.
